Zinc oxide varistors are semiconductor ceramics which have nonlinear properties due to the grain boundaries and their varistor-type microstructures. In this paper, the effect of sintering direction of zinc oxide varistors on their electrical properties are studied. Variation of sintering direction changes the inner pores and concentrators in the grain boundaries, leading to the improvement of electrical and mechanical properties of zinc oxide on its bottom part. Reliability of zinc oxide varistor performance is highly dependent on the energy absorption capability of varistor. Variation of sintering direction of varistors intensively increases their energy absorption capability. After measurement of electrical characteristics, it is observed that the best electrical properties of varistor is related to the varistors with horizontal direction in sintering; Because in this mode varistor has the smallest contact area with the holder during sintering.
